VIDEO: Three people are dead, others seriously hurt, and more than a dozen families are homeless after a fire tore through an apartment building in Manhattan overnight, authorities said Monday.
Firefighters were called shortly after midnight to the scene on Dyckman Street, between Vermilyea Avenue and Broadway in Inwood, for a reported fire on the second floor of a six-story building.
People were seen trying to escape the burning building using fire escapes.
More than 200 fire and EMS personnel ultimately responded.
Three people were found dead at the scene. Another five were taken to a hospital in severe condition, according to the FDNY. Four others with injuries described as moderate to minor were taken to hospitals as well.
A firefighter was also said to have suffered minor injuries.
None of the victims has been identified.
More than a dozen families had to leave their homes. The Red Cross is assisting.
