The LEGO New York City – The Big Apple (21066) is a representation of the iconic skyline of the American metropolis New York made from LEGO bricks. The 1,465-piece display set is built on a black baseplate with a printed nameplate reading “New York, New York”.
The display set incorporates both well-known locations and landmarks of the approximately 8.5 million-resident city, as well as New York’s nickname “The Big Apple”. The latter is represented in the model by the silhouette of a giant apple, which serves as a “backdrop” for the vignette with a black starry sky. Specifically, the set includes the following buildings and landmarks built in microscale:
At the lower left edge, you can recognize the spiral design of the Guggenheim Museum through several dish elements. Behind it, the miniature version of the actually 443-meter-tall (1,454 ft) Empire State Building rises from the numerous nameless skyscrapers, which is actually located in Midtown Manhattan.
To the right and about the same height, the One World Trade Center is built from LEGO bricks – that building which was constructed at Ground Zero after the destruction of the World Trade Center. On the right edge in the background, the Brooklyn Bridge, one of the oldest suspension bridges in the USA, is built using an interesting “forced perspective”. This creates an illusion of depth for the model of the bridge that spans the East River and connects the neighborhoods of Manhattan and Brooklyn.
In front of the bridge stands the obligatory Statue of Liberty, depicted as a monochrome minifigure in white. The front, central building is presumably meant to represent the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which was built in 1911.
The iconic yellow taxis, which are inseparable from New York’s cityscape, have also been included. These are represented by four yellow LEGO roller skates and are placed around an area dotted with miniature trees that presumably represents Central Park.
