Authorities identify person found dead in Cedar River

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – Officials with the city of Cedar Rapids have shared the identity of the man found dead in the Cedar River as 33-year-old Dakota Freese.

Freese was from Cedar Rapids and was a former Minor League Baseball player for the Staten Island FerryHawks and Lexington Legends.

Witnesses told first responders that he was fishing from the Interstate 380 bridge when he dropped some of his equipment. He then tried waded into the water and tried to swim out to retrieve the items. He was then pulled under by the waves and drowned, officials say.

Police and fire crews responded at 4:34 p.m. and a Johnson County Metro Dive Team located his body at 7:10 p.m. just feet away from where he was last seen.
