New York City health officials confirmed a person has been diagnosed with the measles virus in Manhattan.
The infected person visited Norma Gastronomia Siciliana, an Italian restaurant on Ninth Ave. near W. 53rd St in Hell’s Kitchen from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on April 25, the restaurant posted on Instagram.
“Guests present at this time may have had a possible exposure,” Norma’s Instagram post read. “There is no known ongoing risk at the restaurant.”
The measles-infected person was not vaccinated.
“The NYC Health Department is responding to a measles case in Manhattan through its robust disease surveillance and reporting system, working to identify and notify people who may have been exposed,” a DOH spokesperson said. “The risk to the general public is low due to high vaccination coverage among New Yorkers and there have been no reports of secondary cases. This is a reminder of the importance of vaccination, which is the best protection against measles.”
Including this case from nearly two weeks ago, there have been five confirmed cases of the highly contagious, serious virus in the Big Apple so far this year, according to the Department of Health. The city saw 20 confirmed cases of measles last year.
Officials said all measles cases in NYC this year have been related to international travel.
