NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) — The New York City Department of Health is working to contact people throughout the city who may have been exposed to measles after a recent case in Manhattan, health officials say.
The confirmed case in Manhattan marks the fifth person to be diagnosed with the illness in New York City this year, according to health department data.

The five measles cases were all a result of international travel, with the most recent being an unvaccinated adult, the department reported.
Sporadic cases of measles are not uncommon in New York City due to the international nature of the area, health officials say.
While the risk to the public is considered low due to high vaccination rates in NYC, health officials are still working to notify those who have been exposed.
“This is a reminder of the importance of vaccination, which is the best protection against measles,” officials said.

Residents who believe they are experiencing symptoms are advised to contact their health care provider, local clinic or emergency department before going for care.
Symptoms can include fever, cough, runny nose and watery eyes, followed by a rash. They typically appear 10 to 12 days after exposure, but may appear as early as seven days and as late as 21 days.

The highly contagious respiratory virus spreads through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can also be spread by touching a contaminated surface and then touching the eyes, nose or mouth.
