The Prodigal Murdoch Is Circling New York Magazine The Prodigal Murdoch Is Circling New York Magazine – Moby BREAKING NEWS

James Murdoch (aka the real-life Roman Roy) spent years running 21st Century Fox as his father’s heir apparent before Disney bought most of it in 2019 and the succession question resolved itself, unceremoniously, in his brother Lachlan’s favor. There was no role for James in the reorganized Fox Corporation. He founded Lupa Systems instead and went about building something his family’s empire never was: culturally credible, editorially independent, and pointedly anti-Trump.

The portfolio reads like a rebuttal. Lupa has stakes in Tribeca Enterprises and Art Basel parent MCH Group. His wife Kathryn has backed The Bulwark, the fast-growing anti-Trump digital outlet. Now, according to a scoop from WSJ, James is in advanced talks to acquire New York Magazine and Vox Media’s podcast network, home to Kara Swisher and Scott Galloway’s Pivot, through Lupa Systems. The deal isn’t final and could still fall apart, but the direction of travel is clear.

In 2020, James resigned from the News Corp board citing disagreements over editorial content. In 2024, he joined sisters Elisabeth and Prudence in a Nevada court battle challenging Rupert’s attempt to hand Lachlan sole control of News Corp and Fox after his death. The Murdoch civil war is not just a a metaphor.

What James is building is the answer to what he lost. Rupert has Fox News, the Wall Street Journal. James, if this deal closes, will have New York, the Cut, Vulture, Grub Street, and a podcast network that reaches exactly the audience his father spent fifty years antagonizing.

Unlike Roman, he might actually pull it off.
