NEW YORK (PIX11) – An NYPD officer is facing consequences after being recorded in uniform, calling New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani “nonsense,” “an embarrassment,” and “not his mayor.”

A short snippet of the officer was shared on Instagram Monday by the organization untilfreedom.

Captain James Wilson of Brooklyn’s 94th precinct was later identified by police officials as the man in the video who made the remarks about Mamdani.

The circumstances of the video remain unclear, but it appears to show Wilson on a Brooklyn street with other officers behind him. Multiple people can be heard reacting to Wilson’s comments.

The video begins with Wilson saying, “He’s temporary. He’s expendable.” A woman can be heard asking the Captain if he’s talking about Mayor Mamdani, to which Wilson nods in agreement, saying, “Yeah, he’s nonsense.”

Another person can be heard saying that Madani is his boss, to which Wilson says, “Not my boss. He’s total nonsense. He’s an embarrassment and total nonsense.” The people, including the person filming, can be heard saying that his remarks are crazy and that Mamdani is the Mayor. Wilson then goes on to say, “Not my mayor [referring to Mamdani], all Democrats are a waste of the human race.”

“Imagine individuals who are employed by the city and paid through our tax dollars saying the mayor is expendable and nonsense,” wrote the organization on its Instagram page.  “One thing is for sure, they wouldn’t have that job for long. This appears to be the attitude of many of the NYPD, and if the leadership is saying this, what does that tell you?”

Officials at NYPD said Wilson was transferred to the Communications Division within the 911 Call Center in the Bronx. NYPD officials also noted that his disciplinary process is ongoing.

“I saw the video. I did not, however, have any involvement in that decision, nor did my City Hall,” Mamdani said during a press conference on Wednesday.

Department policy prohibits an officer, while on duty, from publicly expressing personal views about a political party.
