STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Two firefighters and one civilian suffered minor injuries as a fire broke out at a two-story home in Bay Terrace Thursday afternoon.
The call was received just before 3 p.m. at 219 Evergreen St. near Redwood Avenue, according to an FDNY spokesperson.
The large “all hands” response drew 12 units containing 60 firefighters and EMS personnel, the spokesperson said.
Halloween decorations stared out from the windows and stood silent on the lawn of the semi-attached house as neighbors gathered to take in the scene of firefighters extending two tower ladders up toward the second floor of the residence.

A family member told the Advance/SILive.com that one of the home’s owners, a 71-year-old woman, attempted to re-enter the home through thick smoke to rescue her two dogs before she was overcome.
The two dogs — a bijon named Thor and yorkie named Justin — were safely rescued from the residence by firefighters. The woman refused medical attention at the scene, the FDNY spokesperson noted.

A door and siding on the exterior of the home could be seen with scorch marks, while a first-floor window was busted out with what remained of the smoke wisping out into the afternoon air.
An FDNY official told the Advance/SILive.com that the fire originated on the first floor in the rear of the dwelling. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
