According to Torres, Concepcion is an American citizen. The other incident allgedly invovles a man being “forcefully removed from his building.”
The congressman said the incidents “exemplify the callous tactics used by this Administration against American citizens and exposes the deep rot that has consumed the agency.”
He called on the department to respond by May 22.
NY1 has reached out to ICE and DHS on the two incidents and the letter and has not heard back.
The criticism comes as Democratic lawmakers have made immigration a major election issue.
On Friday, Rep. Dan Goldman, who is facing a primary challenge, called out the Trump administration’s tactics amid his weekly visit to 26 Federal Plaza.
“Thisis the civil rights issue of our era. I think what is going on with this deportation dragnet is fundamentally unAmerican,” he said.
Goldman said on Friday he observed four individuals in custody, including one woman who was detained in the morning.
“She was arrested after an asylum appearance where she received a preliminary hearing date for August which means she has an active asylum claim,” he said. “That means she is lawfully here yet she was arrested and we have no idea why or what is going to happen to her.”
A recent Siena Poll of registered voters in New York found that 54% said immigration enforcement is going in the wrong direction versus 39% who said it was going in the right direction.
Meanwhile, Brooklyn Borough President and congressional candidate Antonio Reynoso sent a letter to Mayor Zohran Mamdani this week demanding stricter rules on the police department’s interaction with ICE.
Reynoso called into question the NYPD’s involvement at an anti-ICE protest at Wyckoff Heights Medical center earlier in the week.
“We don’t want any assistance, don’t hold their doors. Don’t push them through. That’s them. You are New York City and in New York City we take care of our immigrants,” said Reynoso at a rally on Monday.
