MILLBROOK — It was just another Wednesday for Millbrook Deli co-owner Jim Greene until a man wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and red sweatpants walked into his business around lunchtime last week to order a sandwich. The man was pop icon Justin Bieber.
“My counter girl and myself, neither one of us recognized him with his hood on,” Greene said.

Around a dozen customers who were waiting for their food at the time also didn’t recognize Bieber until he held the door open for a customer walking in. The customer immediately recognized him and “lost her mind,” Greene said.
The next day, on Thursday, Greene said the phone at the deli was ringing all day, with people calling to ask if Justin Bieber was there. Later in the day, Greene was walking down Franklin Avenue in Millbrook when he spotted Bieber down the street in front of the Millbrook Diner. Greene then picked up his walking pace to catch up with him, thinking of the reactions his daughter and two stepdaughters would have if he got a photo with him.
“I said, ‘My daughters are killing me. Can you take a selfie with me? It would just make their day.’ And he said, ‘Absolutely,’ ” Greene said. “He was super nice to everyone.”
To the surprise of local business owners and residents alike, Bieber and his wife — model and entrepreneur Hailey Bieber — were in and around the village of Millbrook between early last week and early this week, Greene and ALL THAT JAVA owner Samantha Sapienza said.

To-go coffee shop ALL THAT JAVA has four locations across the Hudson Valley: Millbrook, Stanfordville, Rhinebeck and Tivoli. Sapienza said the Biebers visited her Millbrook and Standfordville locations multiple times between early last week and early this week.
“Our baristas commented on how kind they both were, hugging fans and taking photos with them. And they loved our coffee,” Sapienza said. “It was a complete surprise and total thrill, and now to see them in posted photos holding my coffee cup with my beloved logo … there are no words!”
By the end of the week, crowds of people had gathered in the village, including Connecticut resident Duda Almeida, who said she’s been a fan of the pop singer since he rose to fame around 2010.

“I had seen through fan pages that he was in upstate New York, and I’ve been a fan of him ever since he first blew up. Meeting him had always been a dream of mine, and when I realized he was close to where I live, I saw it as an opportunity to finally make that dream come true,” Almeida wrote in a statement. “The craziest and most special part for me was that on (April 27), I had a dream that I met him, got a hug from him and told him that I had gone to Coachella — which is exactly what ended up happening on Saturday, the 2nd.”
Justin Bieber was one of the headliners at Coachella 2026, held in California last month.
Almeida ran into the Biebers at ALL THAT JAVA’s Millbrook location at 149 Church St. on Saturday afternoon. She said Justin Bieber was “incredibly sweet” and “gave (her) the best hug.” Almeida also spoke to Hailey Bieber, who she said was “incredibly kind, just like (Justin) was.” She posted selfies with the two on Instagram, which had garnered over 12,000 likes by Friday afternoon.
Sapienza said other celebrities — such as Lin-Manuel Miranda, Katie Holmes, Corbin Bernsen, Joe Jonas and Jenna Bush Hager — have visited her ALL THAT JAVA locations, which she thinks is due to the shops’ proximity to New York City.

“We have a lot of famous people that live here and visit here, but nothing that draws the tension that (Justin) did,” Greene added. “It was wild.”
It’s unclear why the Biebers were in the Hudson Valley. Days later, during this year’s Met Gala in New York City on Monday, Hailey Bieber told Vogue she’s recently gotten into making coffee, including experimenting with homemade banana cold foam and cinnamon-crumble coffee.
“I’m a sugary coffee girl,” she told Vogue. “Not too sweet, but I like a flavored coffee.”
This isn’t the first time the Biebers have been spotted in the Hudson Valley. In 2018, they were seen at Nature’s Pantry in New Windsor.

Hailey Bieber grew up in Nyack, a village in Rockland County, before moving to New York City at 17 to pursue her modeling career, according to GQ. Now, she primarily lives in Los Angeles with Justin.

While Justin Bieber doesn’t seem to have any local ties to the region, other than his relationship with his wife, he has performed in the Capital Region before, including in 2010 for his “My World Tour.”

“Wus up, Albany? Welcome to my world,” the then-16-year-old told the crowd at the Times Union Center, now MVP Arena.
