STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Given high winds impacting New York City Thursday, a trailer ban has been put into effect for the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, according to a post on X by Notify NYC, the city’s official emergency notification system.
“@MTA Due to high winds, empty tractor trailers, tandem, piggyback, dual and multiple trailers are prohibited from using the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge,” the post stated as of Thursday morning. “All authorized trucks must utilize the lower level. Use alternate routes.”
The ban comes after the MTA placed speed restrictions on the bridge Thursday morning due to wet roadways, as previously reported.
Meteorologists anticipate wind gusts of 30-40 mph during Thursday’s storm. Gusts could even reach up to 50 mph along the immediate coastline.
In addition to high winds, residents should expect rainfall throughout the day. The heaviest rain is forecast to come down in the late afternoon/early evening hours. By the time all is said and done on Friday morning, the city will have likely received somewhere between 1.5 and 2.5 inches of rain, according to previous reporting.
The combination of rain and onshore winds may produce minor coastal flooding during Thursday afternoon’s high tide cycle.
