ELIZABETH, New Jersey (WABC) — A bear is stuck up in a tree, very high up, in Elizabeth, New Jersey on Monday.
Concerned residents called authorities to a tree on the 600 block of Court Street, but New Jersey Fish and Wildlife says it’s too risky to try to get the bear down.
If they tranquilize it, the fall could injure the bear or one of the people trying to get it down.
They plan to monitor the situation and say they will respond if the bear moves to a lower tree at a height of 20-30 feet.
Their current protocol is to not respond to bear calls unless the bear is actively behaving aggressively toward people.
Residents said they believe they spotted a younger bear with the one up the tree in the neighborhood earlier in the morning, and they were responsible for knocking over a few garbage cans.
As of Monday afternoon, Court Street is blocked off.
