1. City of Buffalo settles civil lawsuit with late firefighter Jason Arno’s estate
More than three years after the death of Buffalo firefighter Jason Arno, lawsuits over liability have come to a close. The city of Buffalo has settled a civil lawsuit with the estate of late firefighter Jason Arno for nearly $5.9 million, to be paid out over the course of three years, on Monday.
2. New budget includes funding to replace Buffalo firefighters’ turnout gear
Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan’s proposed $681 million budget includes money to replace turnout gear for Buffalo firefighters. City research shows PFAS, or forever chemicals, are commonly used when making firefighter turnout gear. The new gear would not be made with those chemicals.
3. Rec Room co-owners to take over Rapids Theatre in Niagara Falls
Niagara Falls concert venue Rapids Theatre is under new leadership as concert promoter Chris Ring and restaurateur Dale Segal have been selected as the new operators of the Main Street venue.
4. Buffalo Bills newcomers hit the field for rookie minicamp
The Buffalo Bills rookie class might be done with school, but the learning curve is a steep one as they hit the field for the first time in the NFL at rookie minicamp in Orchard Park. Buffalo’s 10 draft picks, alongside undrafted free agents and tryout players, took the field in front of new head coach Joe Brady and his staff.
5. Hochul defends state budget process as finalization efforts continue
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul on Monday defended the state budget process after brief conflicting messages from her and state Assembly Majority Leader Carl Heastie on where budget negotiations stood late last week, though a final deal remains unfinished.
6. Three New Yorkers were on hantavirus-stricken cruise ship, Hochul says
Three New Yorkers, one of whom is from New York City, were aboard the cruise ship at the center of a deadly hantavirus outbreak, Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Alister Martin said Monday. It is unclear whether any of the New Yorkers tested positive for the virus, Hochul said.
