NEW YORK, (WBNG) — Deep-sea fishermen who are out looking for black seabass this season are to be advised that certain regulations have been changed for anglers, according to new information from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.
The 2026 black seabass season is scheduled to start on May 16, and the NYSDEC has set some new guidelines for those taking to the sea to catch the fish.
Starting May 16 to Aug. 31, anglers may keep three fish at 16 inches. Starting Sept. 1 to Dec. 31, the possession limit is set to increase to allow anglers to keep six fish per day, the DEC said.
For anyone interested in catching these fish, but doesn’t have a boat, the DEC suggested many party and charter boats on Long Island and in the NYC area that target these species and others with great success. Booking these trips is a great way to support the state’s local fishing industry.
The DEC said to make sure anglers renew their New York Recreational Marine Fishing Registry. The renewal is free and is required for all anglers 16 years and older.
