New York initiates domestic incident response curriculum

  • October 30, 2025

NEW YORK (WBNG) — Seventeen counties across New York are part of the Statewide Targeted Reductions in Intimate Partner Violence program, which allows law enforcement agencies and community organizations to enhance partnerships and support survivors.

Broome County has received $800,000 in funding.

The state’s focus includes requiring officers to complete a 16-hour domestic incident response curriculum.

“It’s really going to lead to saving lives right here in Broome County, and that’s what it’s all about,” said Broome County District Attorney Paul Battisti. “Helping the survivors of these traumatic incidents, and it’s something that we support 100%.”

Danielle Nuzzo, the director of legal advocacy at the Crime Victim Assistance Center, says there’s always room for more education on the issue.

“It’s important for all of us to remember that no matter how long we’ve been working in human services, victim services, and even law enforcement, there’s always something to learn,” Nuzzo said. “The best collaborations are the ones where we’re learning from each other, and I think moving forward, that collaboration is going to teach all of us a lot more about what we do.”

State Senator Lea Webb applauds Governor Hochul for helping make the initiative possible.

“I applaud the Governor for taking this important step, especially given that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month,” Webb said. “The governor’s announcement today and the work we’ve been doing in the Women’s Issues Committee in the state legislature are key to supporting survivors.”

The officer training will cover a range of topics, including decision-based exercises and understanding trauma from survivors.
