Erie Canal opens to boaters for another season

The 363-mile Erie Canal is now open to boaters. It opened on Friday for another season.

This year marks the canal’s 201st consecutive season of navigation. This piece of the state’s history changed the way people and goods traveled from one end of New York to the other. It runs from Buffalo, all the way to Albany, where it connects to the Hudson River.

Around 85% of upstate New York’s population lives within 25 miles of the Erie Canal.

Canal locks operate from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. with extended hours at certain locations. More information can be found at canals.ny.gov.
