Work from home? LIRR strike has officials scrambling ahead of workweek

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Commuters who rely on the Long Island Rail Road shouldn’t expect to be taking the service into work Monday as stalled strike talks continue to hurt travelers.

The LIRR’s strike began this weekend after conversations between railroad unions and the MTA devolved as the two tried to reach an agreement on wages increases for workers — something IAM Union International said was “completely avoidable,” according to reporting by NBC News.

Missing by “less than 1 percentage point,” NBC wrote, 3,500 employees walked off the job Saturday to commence the first LIRR strike in 30 years.

As things remain in a stalemate between the state and the unions, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that shuttle buses and increased subway service will be available. However, the governor was clear to say Sunday that, “It’s impossible to fully replace LIRR service.”

The buses will begin their treks from Long Island to New York City at 4:30 a.m. on Monday at six different locations in both Nassau and Suffolk counties. They will drop passengers in Queens to allow them to catch subway connections.

Officials implored workers who are allowed to work from home to stay put while the strike is in action in order to ease the coming commuter strain.

“New York is a pro-labor state,” Hochul said of the negotiations. “We believe in working men and women receiving a fair wage and benefits, but the MTA cannot agree to a contract that would raise fares as much as 8% and risk hiking taxes for Long Islanders.”

The MTA blames the unions for leaving the table and starting the strike, but CEO Janno Leiber added, “We made it clear we are available if they want to come back and negotiate.”

“Long Island Rail Road workers want to be doing what they’ve always done — serving the riding public and keeping LIRR moving safely and efficiently,” IAM Union International President Brian Bryant said, according to NBC News. “But after years without raises and with the cost of living continuing to climb across Long Island and the New York City area, workers deserve a fair contract that recognizes their contributions and sacrifices. This strike was completely avoidable, and the coalition remains ready to negotiate at any time if MTA leadership is finally prepared to bargain seriously.”
