(NewsNation) — Dozens of beagles recently sprung from a Wisconsin breeding and research facility have shown amazing progress under the care of a New York City animal welfare organization, the group’s president says.
Second Chance Rescue in Queens took in the dogs as part of a larger effort to find homes for 1,500 beagles from Ridglan Farms, the Madison area test lab that was the site of animal-rights protests earlier this year.
Ridglan Farms gave up its license and sold the dogs after authorities said the lab violated state veterinary standards. Several animal shelters across the U.S. partnered in the effort to provide a pipeline for the dogs’ adoption.

This weekend, Second Chance founder Jennifer Brooks offered a positive update on the beagles her group has been rehabilitating with the help of experts like trainer Sal Romano, who also said the dogs are acclimating well.
“All of our beagles have been adopted,” Brooks told NewsNation on Sunday. “We had such a huge demand. So many beautiful families wanted to welcome them after all that they went through.”
Unfortunately, Brooks said, other dogs are languishing in research facilities even though testing animals for cosmetics and household products has become outmoded and unnecessary.
“Beagles are so resilient, and that’s why they use them in labs because when they do bad things to them, they don’t have a negative reaction. They’re just always so sweet and docile,” she said.
