MASSENA, New York (WWNY) – A word of caution, hold off on any plans to go swimming in St. Lawrence County this Sunday; the heat betrays the coolness of the water.
It may seem warm outside, but the water is cold, currently around 40 to 50 degrees across Lake Champlain, and possibly colder in the smaller lakes and rivers.
It’s water temperatures that can cause you to pass out immediately due to cold shock, and can cause hypothermia according to the Coast Guard.
Even if you’re just planning to go out on a small boat or kayak, there’s a good chance your boat can tip over. High winds and fast water are also a factor.
