CITYWIDE – NEW YORK CITY will add 2,000 new preschool and daycare seats for three-year-olds across all five boroughs, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced on Monday. Community-based providers will house a majority of the new seats.
Roughly 700 families remained on the waitlist after the city’s 3-K application update period closed on April 24, and will automatically be given seats. All previous applicants will receive an offer on Tuesday, May 19.
The city will also launch a new waitlist, allowing families to express interest in new sites and to potentially receive an offer at a preferred program closer to home or with siblings. Families can continue adding themselves to waitlists for all programs, and seats will be offered based on availability.
Additionally, after years of community demand, the Mamdani administration announced a new early childhood education center with 63 seats on Van Brunt Street in the Columbia Waterfront area, after the previous administration left the building vacant, City Hall said. This marks the ninth previously vacant child care center opened by the administration.
