Advocates, local leaders and impacted residents met virtually on Monday to discuss the future of Seneca Meadows, the largest landfill in New York.
Critics say the landfill is the largest single-point source of methane emissions in New York.
“The landfills’ odors aren’t something you can just accept and move on from. As a parent, I am deeply concerned about what that horrible stench is doing to their growing bodies,” Seneca Falls resident Sarah Mull said.

A law passed by the town in 2016 required the landfill to close when its permit expired in December, but a loophole in New York state law allows it to continue operating while the Department of Environmental Conservation considers Seneca Meadows’ request.
The landfill wants to expand by more than 40 acres and continue operations until 2040.
Owners say allegations of harmful health impacts from the landfill are false and that the site is regularly monitored by the state.
