STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — New trash bins will soon be required for many New York City homeowners, and you may be wondering how many trash bins you should buy.

According to the New York City Department of Sanitation, the NYC Bin will be required for trash collection beginning June 1. All properties with one to nine residential units will be required to use the official NYC Bin for curbside collection, according to the city Sanitation Department.

This applies to New York City homeowners, as well as agencies, non-profits, houses of worship, and professional offices in residential buildings.

You can choose between three different bin sizes for your household — 25-gallon, 35-gallon and 45-gallon bins.

But you may need more than one bin depending on where you live.

According to the city Department of Sanitation, property owners and building managers should ensure there are enough bins to accommodate all trash in sealed NYC Bins.

If you live in a home that accumulates a large amount of trash, you may need to purchase several bins. If you live in an apartment building or other type of housing that has more than one residential unit, building managers should purchase enough bins to accommodate the amount of trash.

So what if you should have extra trash from a special event — like a party, spring cleaning or home construction project — that doesn’t fit into a bin?

The Department of Sanitation said that residents should ensure they have sufficient bins to accommodate all trash. That means you can’t stack trash in a bin in which the lid can’t close, or place trash bags beside a full bin.

Many Staten Islanders have been experiencing trouble finding and purchasing a required bin at Home Depot stores.

Home Depot typically restocks shelves overnight with new inventory arriving throughout the week. High-volume items, like the NYC Bins, are being restocked regularly, according to the city Department of Sanitation.

This means that most bins will be restocked in the early morning hours. So if you want a shot at grabbing a bin, try visiting your local store when it first opens.

The Home Depot app also offers a feature to set up inventory alerts for out-of-stock items. You can also try to call your local store directly to ask about their specific truck schedule.

Local Facebook groups have also been sharing restocked bins for purchase at Home Depot stores.

The city Department of Sanitation told the Advance/SILive.com that the agency is in “regular contact with Home Depot,” which is restocking each day. Supply will also increase as the June 1 deadline approaches, according to the city.

While recent city Department of Sanitation rule implementations have begun with a warning period, dates for a transition period for the NYC Bin haven’t yet been announced.

More than 1 million bins have been purchased thus far ahead of the deadline, according to the sanitation department.

NYC Bins are also available for recycling and composting — but they are only required for trash, according to the Sanitation Department.

The NYC Bin was unveiled in July 2024 as the next step in New York City’s plan to get black trash bags off the streets. The bins were selected to cost no more than $50 for the most common size, available in multiple sizes, are rat-resistant, easy to use by sanitation workers, and are compatible with mechanized collection trucks.
