NEW YORK (PIX11) —The summer-like temperatures have arrived, and it’s only going to get hotter. A heat advisory has been issued for New York City and New Jersey by the National Weather Service

A strong southwesterly flow has taken over the Eastern US and will cause temperatures to soar well into the 90s.

The heat advisory that has been issued for the city goes into effect on Tuesday, starting at 10 p.m. and continuing until 8 p.m. Wednesday. The hot temperatures could be dangerous for the most vulnerable, and they should remain inside an air-conditioned room.

The air quality alert that was issued on Monday has already been reissued for Tuesday, starting at 11 a.m. and continuing until 11 p.m, according to the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. Under the alert, pollution levels are expected to be elevated, and any strenuous activities done outdoors should be limited.

Monday night will be a very warm one. Overnight temperatures will only dip into the lower 70s under mostly clear skies.

The heat will be on for Tuesday. Temperatures will soar into the mid and upper 90s. LaGuardia and Newark may see their record highs threatened as forecast temperatures will reach 96 and 98 degrees, respectively.

The heat will continue into Wednesday as well, with temperatures reaching the mid 90s. A cold front will arrive, bringing strong thunderstorms during the latter part of the day.

Much cooler air will quickly make a return for the rest of the week.

Thursday features temperatures topping out at around 70 under a mix of sun and clouds.

Temperatures will cool down further on Friday as a few more clouds develop. Highs may only be in the upper 60s.

For now, Memorial Day weekend looks to be on the cool and unsettled side.

Saturday will feature showers and temperatures in the lower 70s.

The shower threat does less into Sunday and Monday with temperatures improving into the upper 60s to around 70 degrees.
