MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) — U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested someone at 26 Federal Plaza less than 24 hours after a judge ruled that the agency is prohibited from doing so, according to lawmakers and pro-immigrant organizations.
The New York Immigration Coalition said an individual was arrested at 26 Federal Plaza on Tuesday. Rep. Dan Goldman said he is aware of and investigating the arrest.
Goldman says it “certainly appears” ICE has defied its court order.
“We are rapidly gathering information regarding the nature of this arrest and working to connect his family members with necessary resources through our triage center,” Goldman said on X.
On Monday, a U.S. district judge ruled that ICE agents are prohibited from making civil immigration arrests at immigration courts in New York City.
“Defying a federal court order undermines the rule of law and erodes public trust in our institutions,” the NYIC said in a statement. “If ICE cannot follow the law, it simply should no longer exist.”

In response to the judge’s ruling, the official Department of Homeland Security social media account issued a strong statement in its opposition, saying: “It is commonsense to take illegal aliens into custody following completion of their removal proceedings.
Nothing prohibits arresting a lawbreaker where you find them. We are confident we will ultimately be vindicated in this case.”
ICE deferred PIX11 News to the DHS upon request for comment on the alleged arrest made Tuesday. DHS did not immediately respond.
