Travelers at LaGuardia Airport faced delays and cancellations Wednesday after a sinkhole was discovered on one of the airport’s two runways.

“Frontier just canceled my flight, and I’m going to be stuck here until Friday, I think,” said Nion Sedilko, who was trying to fly home to Cleveland.

“A sinkhole?” traveler Rohan Nepal said. “They did not tell us anything about that. That sounds crazy. I hope they get this fixed soon. We don’t know what to do.”

A spokesperson for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said the sinkhole on Runway 4/22 was discovered just before noon. The runway was immediately shut down, and emergency construction and engineering crews began working to determine the cause and repair the damage.

The Federal Aviation Administration said a ground delay was issued for LaGuardia shortly after the discovery. A ground stop and additional delays were later issued because of thunderstorms.

Travelers like Elizabeth Wong and her family said they were told cancellations were weather-related, but their airline did not mention the sinkhole.

“It’s very scary. I get nervous flying in general, and now with everything going on, it’s really, really scary,” Wong said.

Wong said her family is now struggling to find another way home to Toronto.

Their original flight was canceled before they arrived at the airport. They rebooked with another airline, but that flight was also canceled.

“And there’s no reimbursement because it’s due to weather,” Wong said.

Sedilko and her family also were stranded. She said they were told they could receive a refund or take the next available flight Friday.

“They said the weather and something else. They don’t give a clear answer at all,” Sedilko said. “I might have to pay for my hotel tonight or tomorrow because the next flight is Friday.”

NY1 contacted several airlines to ask whether some cancellations were related to the sinkhole or weather, but did not receive a response.
