CENTRAL PARK — THIS SUMMER’S FREE Shakespeare in the Park season kicks off on Friday night at Central Park’s Delacorte Theater with the first performance of “Romeo and Juliet” — and more ticket distributions in Brooklyn than ever before.
Tickets to see the performances are, as always, free, and are distributed in person and online. Would-be Shakespeare-goers can either wait in line at the Delacorte, enter an online or in-person lottery at the Public Theater, or get a ticket at a distribution site across the five boroughs, an offering that has been expanded this year.
“Romeo and Juliet” tickets will be distributed at locations across Brooklyn, including Brooklyn Public Library and Citizen Bank branches, on ten dates this summer: May 26, 28 and 31, and June 3, 4, 12, 16, 20, 24 and 27. Last summer, after the Delacorte reopened following two years of renovations, New Yorkers began lining up overnight outside Central Park in the hope of snagging a sought-after free ticket to “Twelfth Night.” The Public Theater “strongly discourages” lining up before 6 a.m., when the park opens.
Shakespeare in the Park is an annual, free outdoor season of performances run by the Public Theater. “Romeo and Juliet” will run through June 11. The second show of the season will be “The Winter’s Tale,” which opens on July 25 and runs through Aug. 23.
