Manhattan boys & girls sweep team titles at 6A Track & Field Regionals

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Local high school track & field athletes clinched their tickets to the Class 6A state tournament at the Washburn Rural Regional.

Manhattan saw the most automatic state qualifiers with 27 girls and 27 boys placing in the top three of their events to punch a ticket to state.

For the girls, Washburn Rural placed fourth as a team with 16 event qualifiers, followed by Junction City in sixth with 14 and Topeka High in seventh with three.

For the Boys, Washburn Rural placed second with 16 event qualifiers. Junction City took third with 14, and Topeka High finished in seventh with three.

Amongst the winners was Washburn Rural’s Christian Hartman-Babb, who set a PR in the boys’ 100 meters with a time of 10.36 to take first place at regionals. According to Mile Split, that is the fastest 100m time in Kansas this season.

“I wasn’t really looking for a time,” Hartman-Babb told 27 Sports. “To have a state lead time going into the state meet is a huge confidence boost.”

For the Junior Blues, freshman Alyson Hinck beat a school record in the girl’s 800 meter with a time of 2:16.83. She beat Washburn Rural’s school record by 0.4.

“It feels really good,” Hinck noted to 27 Sports. “I just didn’t think I could ever do it, but I’m glad I did. I’m just glad I pushed it for my all and got my ticket to state.”

The field events was highlighted by a first place finish from Junction City’s J’Sean Green in the boy’s triple jump. He hit a personal best with a 45-2.50 mark.

“This year I’m just doing what god’s will has for me and just going out there and competing with all my heart,” Green told 27 Sports.

The Class 6A state meet will be at Wichita State from May 29-30.
