Hoichoi has dropped the teaser of its upcoming original series Queens on Friday, unveiling yet another impactful, action-oriented, woman-centric narrative that will perhaps explore themes of woman power, grief and revenge.

Led by Mimi Chakraborty, Queens appears to be about a group of four women, a mother-in-law and her three daughters-in-law, who have all been widowed on a single night of brutal attack on their husbands. The teaser informs the viewer that the carnage took place on the night of the wedding reception of one of the daughters-in-law Meera (Mimi), and was probably a pre-planned, cold-blooded crime committed by those who held a long-standing grudge against the family. The murders point to a history of conflict and hostility, perhaps related to politics and power struggles and indicate a story of political rivalry, vendetta and payback.

The voiceover by Meera that recounts the chilling incidents with an almost deadpan calm that is devoid of any emotion, also indicates Meera’s determination to seek vengeance and a surging anger which she is fighting hard to keep in check. Her words suggest that her wealthy and influential in-laws’ family was the target of enmity by people who would not spare the women of the family either — and that it would soon be the women’s turn to die. The ominous threat to the lives of the women characters is soon superceded by Meera’s resolve to take the fight back to the killers, both as a means of survival and of revenge. As Meera, the new bride-turned-grieving widow, Mimi balances her vulnerability with strong survival instincts and a burning desire for retribution, portraying a character who channels her pain and trauma into anger and ferocity.

The teaser suggests a narrative where the women of the family come together in grief, not merely to mourn, but as brave, strong, resilient women who are intent on avenging the death of their husbands. The scene where the four women are seen fearlessly walking through a factory or warehouse that is the stronghold of the enemy screams feminine unity, energy, courage and confidence, that can win over the strongest of opponents with their combined strength. Another scene where the women can be seen held captive in enemy territory suggests a high-voltage, intense climactic encounter through which the women will perhaps exact their revenge.

Besides promising a gripping thriller, the teaser indicates that Queens will be much more than a conventional revenge drama or simply a tale of settling scores with the enemy — it will be an inspiring tale of grit, courage, character and woman power, in which four widows rise above their shock and grief and together decide to challenge their imminent fate. The narrative also indicates the breakdown of patriarchal power structures in a politically-volatile ecosystem where violence and bloodshed are a part and parcel of the world of politics, authority and influence.

A combination of haunting vocals and pounding percussion beats initially builds an atmosphere of tragedy and doom in the teaser, but transitions quickly to reflect its themes of aggression, female empowerment and revenge. Also starring Baisakhi Marjit, Payel De, Debjani Singha and Durbar Sharma, Queens, directed by Nirjhar Mitra premieres on Hoichoi on June 12.
