Meteorologists are warning that a rare and historically powerful “Super” El Niño is rapidly developing in the Pacific Ocean and could peak by the fall or winter of 2026, potentially reshaping weather patterns across the globe and in the New York City region.

New analysis from European forecast models shows a 100% probability the climate pattern reaches “super” status by November, according to FOX Weather.

El Niño is a naturally occurring climate cycle that develops every two to seven years when tropical Pacific Ocean temperatures rise at least 0.5 degrees Celsius above normal for an extended period. The warming alters jet streams and atmospheric circulation worldwide.

Scientists say the growing heat in the equatorial Pacific could help push global temperatures to record highs, potentially making 2026 or 2027 the hottest years ever recorded on Earth, according to CNN.

Forecasters also expect the event to suppress Atlantic hurricane activity because stronger upper-level wind shear tends to disrupt tropical storm development, according to FOX Weather.

For the New York City area, El Niño winters have historically leaned milder and wetter than average, especially across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, according to NOAA climate outlooks cited in multiple forecast reports. A stronger subtropical jet stream could increase the frequency of coastal storms and soaking rain events during the colder months.

Weather experts caution, however, that significant uncertainty remains regarding exactly how intense the system becomes and how sharply local impacts are felt in the Northeast. CNN reported that while confidence is high a Super El Niño will form, the eventual peak strength is still uncertain.
