STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — New York City public school students will have off from school for two days next week.
Students will enjoy a three-day weekend as all public schools will be closed on Monday, May 25, for Memorial Day. The federal holiday is held the last Monday in May each year and is a day to mourn and honor deceased service men and women.
While students will head back to class the following day on Tuesday, they will have another day off next week.
Public schools will also close on Wednesday, May 27, in observance of Eid al-Adha, a Muslim holiday.
Called the Feast of Sacrifice, the major holiday is celebrated by Muslims worldwide for three to four days. Most Muslims will attend special prayers held at major mosques and Islamic centers in the United States and throughout the world.
After next week, there are only two additional days that students will have off from school before the academic year ends.
Students will have off on June 4 for Anniversary Day/Chancellor’s Conference Day for staff development. Public schools will also be closed on June 19 for Juneteenth.
The last day of classes is Friday, June 26.
The public school academic calendar includes some two dozen days off between the first day and the last day of classes.
