Reynaldo Alexis Colon, 21, of New York City, was charged with second-degree criminal trespass, assault on public safety personnel, interfering with an officer, larceny of a motor vehicle and cruelty to animals Tuesday following the overnight, multiagency search in Newtown.
It started around 4:30 p.m. Monday, when an arraignment report says a Jeremiah Road resident called police after returning home to find an unknown man looking into the sliding glass window of her home.
The woman told police the man — later identified as Colon— moved away from the window and sat in her lawn after hearing her vehicle pull up to the residence, and she called 911 out of concern for her safety.
The arraignment report says Colon “immediately fled into the surrounding roadways and residential driveways” when police arrived and ignored an officer’s repeated verbal commands to stop running.
Colon proceeded to run to a construction site in the cul-de-sac of Misty Vale Road and continued into a wooded area, as well as adjacent neighborhoods, “causing significant alarm to local residents,” the report says.
In addition to deploying a drone and multiple K-9 units in search of the suspect, the report says officers “searched several sheds, outbuildings, garages and residences at the request of concerned homeowners.”
During the search, the report says a police cruiser’s license plate reader hit on a 2015 Toyota Highlander parked on Misty Vale Road that had been reported stolen out of Monroe, N.Y.
Newtown police also learned that the person they were searching for “appeared to be wanted by multiple New York agencies for similar behaviors and was likely to break into cars and houses.”
After hours of searching and patrolling, the report says two 911 calls came in around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday about a man, matching the suspect’s description, walking down Jeremiah Road in the area of Cobblers Mill Road.
When a responding officer pulled up in his marked cruiser, the report says Colon fled into nearby woods and ignored the officer’s verbal commands to stop.
Colon was finally captured in the area of Fox Hollow Road around 8:30 a.m., according to the report, which says he resisted arrest and injured a state police K9’s leg and paw before being taken into custody.
After he was in custody, the arraignment report says Newtown police were asked by police in New York not to release Colon and told an extraditable felony warrant, charging him with possession of stolen property, was being processed and would soon be served.
Colon was still being held on a $150,000 bond in Connecticut as of Friday, and not guilty pleas had been entered in his case at state Superior Court in Danbury. Court records show he has a pretrial hearing scheduled for June 17.
