New York City plans to begin enforcing a long-delayed storefront security gate law on July 1, requiring roll-down gates to be at least 70% transparent.
The law was passed 17 years ago, but enforcement has repeatedly been delayed. Businesses that fail to comply could face fines starting at $250 for a first violation and up to $1,000 for additional offenses.
As the deadline approaches, some business owners and advocacy groups are calling for the law to be repealed, arguing the changes could be costly and raise security concerns.
