Manhattan High track and field swept the team titles at Friday’s Class 6A regional meet at Washburn Rural, with the girls scoring 177.5 points and the boys totaling 117 as both teams claimed regional championships and punched a large contingent to state.

The Indians qualified 25 athletes in individual events and advanced all three girls’ relays to next week’s state meet in Wichita.

On the track, the Manhattan girls were led by a pair of regional champions in Demya Gill and Zara Koehn. Gill won the 100-meter dash in 12.01, while Koehn captured the 3,200-meter run in 11:14.48.

Jorryn Hall also claimed a regional title in the shot put with a throw of 40-2 1/2, helping power a strong day for Manhattan’s throwers. Hall added a runner-up finish in the javelin at 116-5, while Ava Curtis placed third in the same event with a throw of 115-5. Kinley Cotton earned a state berth with a fifth-place finish in the shot put at 36-0, and Joss Hall qualified in the discus after placing fourth with a throw of 115-7.

The Indians also saw Alexis Peabody win a regional title in the high jump at 5-2, while Sophia Peabody finished second with the same height to secure her own state berth.

Back on the track, Manhattan qualified multiple athletes. Michelle Jeje placed third in the 100 (12.46) and second in the 200 (25.85), while Sarah Oberreuter finished third in the 200 at 25.95. Lauren Perry advanced in the 400 with a runner-up finish in 58.36.

Gabby Converse qualified in three individual distance events, placing third in both the 800 (2:16.92) and 1600 (5:25.39) while taking fourth in the 3,200 (11:19.47).

In the field events, Kayla Cramer qualified in the pole vault with a third-place finish at 10-0, while Callie Porter advanced in the triple jump after placing second with a mark of 35-9.25.

Manhattan’s girls relays also punched their tickets to Wichita, led by the regional champion 4×800 relay, which won in 9:53.94. The Indians’ 4×100 relay placed second in 48.74, and the 4×400 relay took third in 4:03.20.

The boys also had a strong showing, claiming the regional championship behind a balanced effort across the track and field events.

Wilson Wesch led the way with a regional title in the 800-meter run, crossing in 1:58.31, while also qualifying in the 1600 after placing third in 4:28.52.

Evan Middleton won the shot put with a throw of 57-6.75 and added a fourth-place finish in the discus at 142-7 to qualify in both events.

Derrick Amos earned a regional championship in the high jump at 6-4 and also qualified in the triple jump with a fourth-place finish at 43-6.5. Manhattan swept three of the four state-qualifying spots in the triple jump as Brady Durtschi placed second at 44-1.75 and Michael Jeje took third at 43-9.5.

Elsewhere in the field events, Brekett Kruse finished second in the javelin with a throw of 164-7, Lucas Strawn placed second in the pole vault at 12-6, Logan Herzog qualified in the high jump with a fourth-place finish at 6-2, and Ean Staley earned a state berth in the shot put after placing fourth at 46-9.

On the track, Omar Jebril qualified in the 400 with a third-place finish in 52.39, while Leo Kane advanced in the 110-meter hurdles after placing fourth in 15.12.

The Indians will compete next at the Class 6A State Track and Field Championships this weekend on Friday and Saturday at Cessna Stadium in Wichita.
