REI’s Soho flagship has an official end date — according to Crain’s, the 35,000-square-foot Puck Building storefront will close on July 23. As the company kicked off its annual Memorial Day sale (which the REI union asked co-op members to boycott), Crain’s picked up a Department of Labor filing that revealed the outdoor-goods store’s plans to shutter and lay off its 72 employees in late July, right in the middle of summer camping season.
The Soho location is one of the 11 REI shops that have unionized in the past few years, and its closure will leave a gaping hole in the market for the city’s gearheads looking to try on climbing shoes or find an ultralight tent for their next backpacking trip. Paragon, in my opinion, is a shadow in comparison. The one small consolation of this whole development? The inevitable closeout sales. Prepare accordingly.
