Around NYC

1. Legislature votes on final budget bills, Hochul signs some into law

Gov. Kathy Hochul signed two state budget bills into law over the last 24 hours.

Those include provisions that would enact the car insurance changes she says should cut down on fraud and reduce premiums, crack down on speeding in the city and create new penalties for anyone who intimidates people within 50 feet of a house of worship.

2. Immigrant advocates push for permanent safeguards at 26 Federal Plaza

Lawyers for immigrants held at 26 Federal Plaza asked a federal judge Wednesday to make permanent improvements at the building as overcrowding concerns continue at the Manhattan facility.

Government attorneys pushed back, arguing permanent changes are unnecessary because Immigration and Customs Enforcement has complied with the court order.

3. New York security officials brace for an unprecedented summer

World Cup matches and other large-scale events occurring over the next several weeks are creating a headache for security officials in New York, who are busy preparing for worst-case scenarios.

Over the next eight weeks, the New York area will play host to eight World Cup matches — including the final on July 19 — and Sail 4th 250, a massive maritime celebration to mark the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding.
