The FDNY is continuing its investigation into the explosion last Friday that killed a Flushing man and injured more that 30 others at a Staten Island boat yard.
Multiple published reports state that Xiaoyuan Li and another worker became trapped in a confined space while working at a dry dock at the May Ship Repair Contracting Corp.
The New York Daily News reported Li as being 56 years old. The paper said firefighters looking for Li and his coworker found a fire in a metal structure at about 3:30 p.m. About 50 minutes later there was an explosion that injured 36 people, including two FDNY members, one with serious injuries. The New York Post reported that Li and his family came from China about 10 years ago.
Councilwoman Sandra Ung (D-Flushing) shared her condolences on X this past Sunday.
“He came to this country seeking opportunity, a story shared by so many in our community,” Ung wrote. “My thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.”
