The Bronx Zoo announced Thursday, May 28, that Happy was euthanized following a period of hospice care as she dealt with progressive age-related health issues.
Zoo officials said the difficult decision came after ongoing evaluations by veterinary and animal care staff regarding her condition and quality of life.
“She died peacefully surrounded by her keepers, curators, and veterinarians who have cared for her; some for more than 30 years,” the zoo said in a statement.
According to the Bronx Zoo, female Asian elephants living in North American zoo facilities have a median life expectancy of around 45 years, making Happy notably older than average for her species.
Happy had lived at the Bronx Zoo for nearly 50 years and became a favorite among generations of visitors and staff members.
The zoo noted that Happy’s longtime caretakers formed deep bonds with her over decades of care, relationships officials described as invaluable throughout her life.
The Bronx Zoo’s remaining Asian elephant, Patty, is now 57 years old and “doing well,” according to the zoo. Officials said any future decisions regarding Patty’s care will continue to focus on her individual welfare needs and follow professional zoological standards.
