New York City has succumbed to a dangerous dark force in recent weeks that is inescapable on TikTok: the dotcake. First popularized by the bougie grocery store Butterfield Market, these mini, sprinkle-covered cakes are a blight on the city. (Full disclosure: I have not tasted one because I am morally opposed to waiting in line for two hours for an $11 cup of cavities.) Dotcakes are just the latest confection that has New Yorkers in a chokehold. In 2013 it was Dominique Ansel’s cronut, in 2016 it was rolled ice cream, in 2018 the fish-shaped cake cone was everywhere. Then there was the princess cake and salt bread and … well, you get the picture.
