Sunnyside Community Services (SCS) will host a candidate forum tonight, offering the three candidates vying to succeed Assembly Member Claire Valdez in the 37th District an opportunity to make their case to local voters.
Samantha Kattan, Melissa Orlando and Pia Rahman will all appear at the event, which will take place at 43-31 39th St. from 6:30 p.m. on Monday, June 1.
The event is free to attend, but registration is required to attend. SCS will also be livestreaming the forum.
The organization added that no campaign signage or materials will be permitted at the event but encouraged guests to submit questions for the forum during registration or by emailing info@scsny.org.
Valdez, who is running to succeed U.S. Rep. Nydia Velázquez in New York’s 7th Congressional District, will vacate her seat in the 37th District at the end of the year after two years in office.
Kattan, a tenant organizer backed by the New York City chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), announced her campaign to succeed Valdez in January, shortly after Valdez announced her run for Congress.
Rahman, a nutritionist who served during Covid-19 and a former campaign manager for Assembly District 34 candidate Brian Romero, announced her campaign shortly afterward, while Orlando, a former member of the Queens Chamber of Commerce and an advocate for victims displaced by a five-alarm fire at 43-09 47th Ave., announced her campaign in March.
