New York Blood Center declares blood emergency

The New York Blood Center says its supply has reached critically low levels, forcing it to declare a blood emergency.

According to officials, there were 4,500 fewer donations than are needed to meet hospital demand during the summer, which is when hospitals typically see a rise in serious injuries.

All blood types are needed, but there are certain types that are at dangerously low amounts. Critical levels are O- and B-, while the urgent levels are O+, A- and A+.

The Blood Center reports that while more than 62% of the U.S. population is eligible to donate, only 2% of people in New York actually do.
