An Onondaga County sales tax cap on gas at $4 went into effect on Monday.
The local law limits sales tax collections for the first $4 of the per-gallon price of gasoline and diesel fuel amid a spike in prices due to the war in Iran.
The law will expire on Aug. 30 unless otherwise extended.
The decision means motorists will save 4% — the county’s tax rate — of the cost above $4.
The law is similar to the one county lawmakers implemented in 2022 when gas prices were high, though that cap was at $3.
As of Monday, the average price of regular unleaded gas in New York state is $4.53, according to AAA. State senators last week asked Gov. Kathy Hochul to support a gas and diesel tax holiday to lower costs much like they did in 2022 but the governor has appeared unreceptive to that particular request.
