Meng is being challenged by former U.S. Diplomat Chuck Park in the Democratic primary later this month.
According to Meng’s office, these endorsements reflect the congresswoman’s position as a reliable ally and champion for the LGBTQ+ community, fighting to advance equality, protect against discrimination and defend the rights and dignity of LGBTQ+ Americans.
“Grace Meng understands that the fight for LGBTQ+ equality is inseparable from the broader fight for civil rights, dignity and justice for all New Yorkers,” said John Wahlmeier, president of SDNYC. “She has stood with our community time and time again — defending marriage equality, combating discrimination and making clear that LGBTQ+ rights are human rights. The Stonewall Democratic Club of New York City is proud to endorse Grace Meng for Congress, and we’re ready to help send her back to Washington to keep up the fight.”
SDNYC was founded and named in honor of the Stonewall Rebellion, serving as the first citywide LGBTQ+ Democratic organization in NYC. It has since grown into the largest LGBTQ+ organization in the city and state.
The club was created to represent the interests and concerns of the LGBTQ+ community and advocate at the city, state and national levels for legislation that guarantees equality and fairness for the LGBTQ+ community, as well as supporting candidates who champion LGBTQ+ rights.
“Grace Meng has been a consistent champion for LGBTQ+ equality, reproductive freedom and the broader progressive movement for justice that defines who we are as a club,” said Allen Roskoff, president of Jim Owles. “The Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club is proud to endorse Grace Meng for re-election to keep New York’s 6th District in experienced hands ready to fight the Trump agenda.”
Jim Owles, named in honor of the pioneering LGBTQ+ activist, provides the New York LGBTQ+ community with a progressive, citywide Democratic organization that upholds the values and dignity of the community. It insists that all Democratic candidates speak out strongly in favor of LGBTQ+ rights.
The club also affirms that the struggles for racial equity, anti-war advocacy, LGBTQ+ rights, reproductive freedom and economic justice are interconnected, fighting for Democratic leadership willing to protect the vulnerable and expand justice across all of these fronts.
“The Stonewall Democratic Club and the Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club have long been cornerstones of progressive politics in New York City,” Meng said. “This community has never stopped fighting for marriage equality or against discrimination. I look forward to continuing our work together to defend the progress we’ve made and keep moving forward. I am honored to have the clubs’ endorsements and their trust.”
Meng’s office said momentum behind the congresswoman’s re-election campaign continues to grow with the SDNYC and the Jim Owles endorsements, adding to endorsements from Vote Mama Foundation and several labor coalitions.
She is a proven fighter for LGBTQ+ equality, the office continued, as well as reproductive freedom and a progressive future that her constituents deserve.
