One of the most recognizable voices in the city is speaking up during this year’s Pride Month.
Bernie Wagenblast is known as one of the automated announcement voices for the city’s subway system. In 2023, she shared a new announcement — coming out as a transgender woman at the age of 65. Today, she still has a love of public transit and being a voice for the community.
She’ll be a grand marshal in the New York City Pride March. Wagenblast joined “The Rush Hour” to discuss this year’s pride and being a role model for the LGBTQ community.
“For me, it was so freeing to live this life now,” she said. “For most of my career, I was seen as a straight, cis, white guy. With that came a lot of privilege. I want to use that privilege in my working life to advocate from a position of a little more visibility.”
