CAPITAL REGION, NY (WRGB) — While the future of SNAP benefits is still in limbo due to a federal lawsuit and government shutdown, the New York State Education Department (SED) is offering a list of resources for families.
The Universal Meal Program in schools will not be affected, and students will continue to have breakfast and lunch provided at no cost.
Due to the lapse in SNAP benefits, more families may choose to access the program; schools should anticipate an increased need.
As the lapses in food benefits are expected to impact families in a variety of ways, SED State agencies are ready to assist schools in navigating challenges that may arise.
The regional and community food banks will continue to provide nutrition options.
The NYS DOH has a Regional Food Bank Map where families can find the nearest food pantry.
Food insecurity training is also available through SUNY’s Empire State Service Corps.
