BOROUGHWIDE — A group of males was seen entering and exiting a manhole in Gravesend during the night of May 28.
At 11 p.m., witnesses saw the individuals lifting the manhole cover and entering on McDonald Avenue and Colin Place, cops said. Some of them were seen exiting the sewer system at 2 a.m.
The NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit and the New York City Department of Environmental Protection’s Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations investigated inside the sewer.
“There is no threat to public safety at this time,” said the NYPD. “The investigation remains ongoing by the NYPD’s Intelligence Division.”
The same night, another group was also seen going into a manhole on Heyward Street and Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg at 1 a.m. and exited at 3:40 a.m. The individuals then fled the location in an unknown vehicle to parts unknown.
No arrests have been made.
A source told the New York Post the investigation conducted underground found the incidents appear to be people looking for anything of value that made its way into the city’s sewer system.
In April 2025, three men were arrested for allegedly entering the sewer system on 17th Avenue and 82nd Street. They were each charged with third-degree burglary, possession of burglary tools, fourth-degree criminal facilitation and fourth-degree criminal mischief.
