The Manhattan City Commission, with a 5-0 vote, approved a resolution that opposes the suggested incorporation of the City of Green Valley in Pottawatomie County. The resolution will be submitted for Pottawatomie’s Board of County Commissioners June 11th public hearing.
If approved by Pottawatomie County, the area would become its own municipality with authority over local governance matters, rather than remaining solely under Pottawatomie County jurisdiction.
The Manhattan City Commission’s action reflects the city’s position that creating a new city in the area could complicate future development, fragment service delivery, and create inconsistent governance within a small part of the urban community.
The City of Manhattan has invested significant infrastructure and services into the area, including utilities, fire protection, and other support for development.
Officials say that the resolution is about protecting the interest of Manhattan’s infrastructure investments that have already been made around Green Valley and along the Highway 24 corridor.
Commissioners affirmed support for continued collaboration with Pottawatomie County, with a focus on commercial and industrial growth along the US-24 corridor rather than unilateral annexation of neighborhoods.
