UPDATE Norwood: Downed Tree Blocks Decatur Avenue Causing Some Damage to Parked Cars

A downed tree that fell at 3081 Decatur Avenue on Saturday evening, June 6, between East 204th Street and Mosholu Parkway in Norwood, is currently blocking the street from vehicular traffic.

The tree trunk did not appear to break but appeared to uproot and fall over.

Local residents, Katie and AJ Ramos, said the tree seemingly fell before the heavy rain and thunder started on Saturday evening.

Meanwhile, Katie, who called 911 to report the incident and was informed that FDNY were on the way, said, “Just a lady from that black car had come out with a baby like minutes or seconds you could say before the tree fell.” Asked if she had seen the tree fall, herself, Katie said she did not but that her neighbor saw it and called her to tell her. Asked if the lady turned back after exiting the car and saw the tree falling, Katie said, “No, just my neighbors across the street told me that.”

Katie added, “There was an inspection about a month ago, and about two weeks ago, they had trimmed them all. I think it’s the Parks’ department. I don’t know who… They said they were inspecting them to trim them down.” She added, “And they checked the roots and everything of the tree and it seemed healthy, because it does seem healthy.” She said the neighbors said, “It was just the wind and then whoosh (claps) and it went down.”

Katie said she was in the back and didn’t hear anything. She said she has parking in the back of her home and was expecting her son to visit her by car but said he wouldn’t be able to access the driveway now due to the tree blocking the access.

Ramos didn’t see it fall either and several residents we spoke to also said they did not hear anything.

Residents said there were no injuries to their knowledge but some cars do appear to have incurred some damage, including a broken side mirror.

Several shocked residents were seen milling around the area on Saturday evening, taking in and filming the scene.

Residents said emergency services have been notified and are currently on scene. The sidewalk is passable but the street is currently cordoned off.

Residents said the forestry unit had recently inspected the trees on the block and apparently no major issues were raised.
