EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – “Human Theories” had its world premiere Saturday at the Tribeca Festival, screening as part of their Viewpoints section. WEAU’s Maddy at the Movies watched it as part of her coverage of the festival and her thoughts are below!
Right from its jazzy opening credits, “Human Theories” puts you in a New York state of mind. I’m dubbing it a “super anthology” – there are countless small moments woven together to fill the movie’s 71-minute run time. This innovative spin on the anthology flick is something that fits so perfectly in its setting: New York City. It could probably be done in different places but is uniquely New York; you can bump into someone on the street who has their own life and crazy story.

Like I mentioned, “Human Theories” is made up of a bunch of bite-sized stories and interactions between New Yorkers. The movie starts with someone getting off the subway and is handed off to the person who’s following her a little too closely. These small interactions (or object connections… like two scenes with cameras) push the story along, taking us bad date to awkward roommate interaction. The moments are cringe-inducing at times, and often funny, finding humor in everyday life.
I liked “Human Theories.” It’s a fresh take on the anthology, structure I’ve always liked (but not loved) in film. “Human Theories” doesn’t overstay its welcome and comes to a satisfying and mundane conclusion.
I’m giving “Human Theories” a 3/5. I would revisit it again.
