HUDSON COUNTY, NJ — Two days of 90-degree temperatures in North Jersey were capped with a sudden thunderstorm on Saturday evening, downing trees and causing power outages throughout New Jersey.
In Hudson County, residents reported high winds and damage.
Mayor Emily Jabbour posted that a large tree branch came down in Columbus Park, near Ninth Street, and workers planned to remove it Sunday.
The National Weather Service reported wind gusts of 54 MPH in Jersey City and 58 MPH at Newark Airport during the storm, which blew into Hudson County around 8 p.m. Saturday.
Residents in Hoboken and Jersey City posted videos of people reacting to the storm, and cleaning up.
“POV you ignored the severe thunderstorm warning,” wrote Nazlizeynepn on Instagram, showing people running from Pier A Park as the wind whips up.
“That storm was a doozy,” posted Frank Young, the owner of Treehouse Coffee, with a video showing his staff repairing a fence that had fallen. See that video here.
