HERKIMER, N.Y. — A Herkimer Middle School teacher has been recognized as the top middle school teacher in New York State.
Leah Peyton received the Department of New York Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Award.
She was honored at the Herkimer VFW, where family, friends and local dignitaries watched as she was presented with proclamations from State, County, and Village of Herkimer officials.
The VFW National Citizenship Education Teacher Award recognizes certified educators who show outstanding commitment to teaching and patriotism.
“She plays a big part in our post. She’s a very well-known veteran with our post, and she’s an excellent teacher in the school system,” Dominick Scalise, Herkimer VFW commander, said.
Peyton is also a veteran who served as an air-med nurse in the Air Force.
